I got to admit that I love to see a streak of white in the beard. A few strands of grey in the beard compliment a well-built personality.
My adulation for silver strands in beard surprises many. That is because many people consider white beard a significance of old age.
I am not sure about that analogy. Rather for me, the silver beard indicates a sign of maturity from a man.
Though through personal experience I claim that men can never mature. I can write several books purporting that claim. But for the purpose of not diverting away from this blog post topic. I will stick to removing gray from the beard.
Having a grey beard at 40 is normal. But if you have a grey beard at 25, then you need to read further.
Reasons for White Hair in Beard at an Early Age
There could be plenty of reasons for the premature greying of hair. But the basic science behind it involves the insufficient production of melanin.
Melanin is a pigment that imparts the color to skin and hair. A few major factors contributing to the production issues of melanin include:
1. Genetics
Whether you like it or not. Your destiny plays a major role in your physical appearance. So, if your parent(s) have had premature greying. Then, it is likely for you to have the same fate.
But do not feel despondent seeing the silver beard on your pedigree. You can delay the premature greying by controlling the other factors listed below.
2. Improper Diet
Hydrogen peroxide in the body obstructs melanin production. Catalase, an enzyme works as an antagonist to hydrogen peroxide. Catalase prevents oxidation of cells, thereby preserving melanin reserves.
So, if your diet lacks catalase. Then for sure, it will affect your skin and body color. Therefore, the solution lies in increasing the intake of foods rich in Catalase.
Green leafy vegetables and wheatgrass are a good source of this enzyme. Broccoli, zucchini, and radishes also have significant amounts of Catalase.
Apart from food, water also has an impact on melanin reserves. Potable water, as well as water for topical applications, affects our bodies. So, any contamination or additives in water can become a cause of concern.
The solution for the same lies in identifying the total dissolved solids in water. Then, using a suitable filtration process to get rid of contaminants.
3. External Factors
Going outdoors in the Sun tans the skin. In a similar way, the Sun affects the hair too.
But unlike the skin, Sun lightens the hair color. The extended exposure to scorching Sun decreases the melanin content in hair.
To prevent the damage to melanin from Sun. You need to protect your hair from the harmful rays of the Sun.
If avoiding outdoors is not an option. Then, try to cover up with a cotton cloth or a hat.
4. Stress
It is not surprising to know that stress is evil. It not only leads to hair fall. But it also leads to premature greying of hair.
There is no solution to ceasing the source of stress in one’s life. But you can try bouncing off the stress from your life.
Meditation and having a reliable human network around you help de-stress.
Investing in a disciplined physical regime and a creative hobby is good too.
5. Use of products that are heavy on harmful chemicals
Excessive usage of commercial cosmetics may bring adverse effect. Most of them have ingredients like mineral oil, synthetic colors, and fragrances. These can bring about discoloration of hair.
Also, some fairness products contain bleach that can lighten the hair color. So, to lessen the harm of these products on your beard and mustache hair. The best solution is to use these products on a minimal basis.
3 Hacks for Grey Beard Treatment
If you work on the factors that cause discoloration of facial hair. Then, it is probable to arrest the natural hair color. But at times in spite of what precautions you take. You still can suffer from an early onset of grey hair.
It is not much you can do to reverse grey beard. But if you try some homemade remedies. Then, you can prevent the overall white beard scenario.
1. Grey Beard Reversing Oil
Oils are wonderful to nourish hair follicles. Some of them work to arrest the hair color as well.
Although I am a Castor Oil devotee. But for a grey beard treatment, I recommend Mustard Oil.
From my personal experience, I claim that mustard oil prevents hair discoloration. This is an extra bonus from it, apart from getting strong and nourished hair.
For an enhanced grey beard treatment, adding a few drops of clary sage oil does wonder. You can mix 10 drops of clary sage essential oil to a mix of 50 ml each of mustard and grape seed oils.
Regular use of this oil may not turn the white hair to black. But for sure it will secure the natural color of the beard hair that is not yet white.
2. Grey Beard Treatment Serum
I am a big fan of hair serums. They nourish the hair roots as well as condition the hair’s exterior.
I come up with concoctions for my hair. Taking a cue from them, I came up with a recipe for the beard as well. It is as follows:
2.1 Wash and collect the following – a medium sized onion, curry leaves, rosemary leaves, hibiscus flower
and leaves, mint leaves, potato peels, and a few Indian gooseberries.
2.2 Boil all these ingredients in about a cup of water.
2.3 Remove from boiling once the decoction reduces to about half the initial quantity.
2.4 Once the boiled mixture cools. You can then use it as a beard serum.
2.5 A spray bottle serves the purpose of using this serum best. Though you can use it with your bare hands
as well.
Please note that you can use the ingredients in a dried form too. They are in the resources section at the bottom of this article.
3. Beard Darkening Pack
If none of the above mentioned grey beard treatment work. Or if you cringe at the sight of a grey beard at 30 years of age. Then, there is nothing much you can do except coloring.
There are various options available for coloring hair. But if you want a natural route towards beard coloring. Then, you can use natural hair color to darken your beard. Indigo leaves are good for this purpose.
Indigo leaves are free from Ammonia. Thus, they do not cause any harm to the skin.
